Stanza 1

Remember, no men are strange, no countries foreign
Beneath all uniforms, a single body breathes
Like ours: the land our brothers walk upon
Is earth like this, in which we all shall lie.

The poet asks us to reject labels. Uniforms symbolize nationality or army, yet under them all humans have the same body and mortality. We walk the same earth and return to it.

They, too, aware of sun and air and water,
Are fed by peaceful harvests, by war’s long winter starv’d.

Let us remember, whenever we are told
To hate our brothers, it is ourselves

War creates “hells” that pollute the air we all share. The poem closes by repeating the central message: universal human kinship beyond borders.

1. (i) “Beneath all uniforms …” — What uniforms?

Uniforms stand for outward identities — army uniforms, national uniforms, official/professional dress and cultural markers. The poet means all such external labels.

यहाँ “uniforms” बाहरी पहचान का प्रतीक है—सेना/राष्‍ट्रीय वर्दियाँ, नौकरी/पेशा संबंधी ड्रेस और सांस्कृतिक चिन्ह। कवि सभी बाह्य लेबलों की बात करता है।

4. “Whenever we are told to hate our brothers …” — When? Why? Who tells us? Should we obey?

This happens during war/communal or political propaganda when leaders, media, extremist groups or social media spread hate. We should not obey such calls. The poet says hating “our brothers” makes us dispossess, betray and condemn ourselves, and taking arms defiles the human earth.
