The Best Christmas Present in the World

Michael Morpurgo

The letter was written by Captain Jim Macpherson to his wife Connie during the Christmas truce of 1914, when British and German soldiers celebrated Christmas together by sharing food, singing carols, and even playing football. Years later, the narrator finds Connie in a nursing home and gives her the letter. Mistaking him for her husband Jim, she calls it the best Christmas present in the world.

Speaking & Writing — Option 1: Diary Entry (as Jim, 25 December 1919)

Answer (Simple English)

Date: 25 December, 1919

It is Christmas again. The town looks normal, but I still remember the Christmas of 1914. On that day, enemies shook hands, shared food, sang carols, and played football on the snow. For a few hours, there was no fear and no firing — only peace. Today I miss my friends from both sides. I wish wars could end with games, not guns. I pray that Connie is safe and happy. The memory of that one peaceful Christmas gives me hope even now.

Speaking & Writing — Option 2: Letter (as the Visitor, identity dilemma)

Answer (Simple English)

Dear Friend,
Today I met an old lady named Connie. I went to return a letter that belonged to her husband, Jim. When she saw me, she thought I was Jim. I told her how I found the desk and the letter, but she was not listening; she was too happy. I felt confused. If I told the truth strongly, her happiness might break. So I spoke gently and let her enjoy the moment. I learned that love and memories can be stronger than time. I hope I did the kind thing.
Yours,
A Visitor

Speaking & Writing — Story (from the given outline)

Answer (Simple English)

Title: The Letter that Never Reached

A young doctor and his wife loved their country. The doctor helped freedom fighters secretly. The British caught him and sent him to the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Life there was full of torture. Still, the doctor treated sick prisoners and gave them courage. One day, the prisoners planned a small revolt for better treatment. The doctor supported them. The revolt failed. The doctor was punished and hanged.

His wife kept waiting for him all her life. Every evening she lit a lamp and wrote him letters she could never post. People told her to forget, but she kept faith. Years passed, and she grew old. One day, a stranger came with a letter saved from the past. The letter said, “I am proud to serve my people. If I do not return, do not cry. Keep the lamp of hope burning.” She held the letter to her heart. Her wait finally ended—not because he returned, but because his words came home.
